Kristen and I spent the day at the conservatoy. It was wonderful. We felt like ballerinas dancing around.

At the family supper, I placed a rose at everyone's place setting. Yellow for steph, representing frienship and joy. Pink for my parents meaning admiration and gratitude.

I can choose to go directly though them and not a funeral home.
Going to a funeral home is an emotional experience. Prairie Memorial will come to your home, or other convientient location, to complete the arrangements.
All the required documents will be completed and after the cremation is completed, the remains, death certificate will be delivered to your home. There is also a reception hall that could be used for a ceremony of remembrance.

Why I am choosing Cremation

Costs, a handmade urn will take the place of an expensive casket
You don't have the costs of embalming, purchasing and maintanence of a grave site or tombstone.
I would rather have my body disposed of quickly rather than allow it to decay in a grave.
Environmental concerns (saves land)
Greater flexibility in memorial service

The word cremation comes from the Latin word cremo which means "to burn" - particularly the burning of the dead.

In Saskatchewan, it's slightly lower at 45.5%
B.C. has the highest percentage of cremations at 78%

In Japan 98% of the people are cremated at death.

The Process of Cremation

Ok, so here's what I have to look forward to if I choose to be cremated:

1) I will be transported to a cremation facility, where I will be kept in a fridge for 24 to 48 hours.
2) When it is time for cremation, my body will be placed in a cremation container, then into the cremation chamber (like a big kiln). The process will take 2 to 3 hours, at a temperature between 1400 and 2100 Degrees Fahrenheit.
3) After the firing is over my remains are collected from the chamber. A small amount will be left inside the chamber, and subsequently mingled with the next body to be cremated.... I see a peice coming out of that.
4) My cremated remains are then processed to a consistent size (which means my bones are put in a blender type machine and ground to ashes, which usually weigh several lbs. and take up 150-200 cubic inches.
5) The processed ashes are put into a plastic container. I will be making my own urn for them to be placed in afterwards.
The entire process will take 3 to 5 hours.

Sophie Calle is one of the artists I am researching. She works with installation, photography and conceptual art. I really enjoy her interesting stories that go along with the peices (true or not).

The images on this page pertain to my funeral peice that I am currently working on. Her work is titled "Untitled (The Graves)" It is a series of black and white photographs taken by Calle of grave stones, revealling the inscriptions. Sophie visits her own pre-purchased tomb once a year.
